How do I know GrowTrax™ will work in my climate?
Us the Quiz! Try the Quiz here
Is GrowTrax™ affected by wind?
Yes. Installing GrowTrax™ in windy conditions isn’t recommended. For best results, wait for a calm day to prevent the mat from lifting or shifting.
If you must install in light wind, add a small amount of soil along the edge facing the wind to prevent airflow from getting underneath. The grass will grow up through this soil without issue.
For areas that are frequently windy, we recommend using our PRO-Lawn, which features netting and can be secured with landscape blanket staples for added stability.
Will GrowTrax™ grow on sand?
Yes. But because sand doesn`t have many natural nutrients it’s recommended to mix in some topsoil when loosening the surface then fertilize every spring and fall. The GrowTrax™ will produce great results as the roots can grow freely and deep
Will GrowTrax™ grow on Clay?
Yes but clay is very dense, so we recommend to blend some topsoil into the top 2” and then lay GrowTrax™. Once established it will thrive in your soil or clay conditions.
How do I prevent birds from eating the seeds?
Each roll contains thousands of seeds, so there’s more than enough to establish a full lawn. Birds won’t be able to eat it all, but some customers choose to use a motion-sensor sprinkler as an extra deterrent. The most important step is keeping the roll consistently moist to encourage fast, healthy growth.
What GrowTrax™ varietal is best for Shade?
If your area receives less than 20% good light per day, GrowTrax™ Shade Mix (Fine Fescue) is an excellent choice. This attractive ornamental grass is specially suited to deep shade conditions.
For areas that receive 50% sun or more per day, GrowTrax™ Sun & Shade Mix (Green Year Round) is the ideal option. It thrives in partial shade while maintaining healthy, consistent coverage throughout the year.
When to plant GrowTrax™?
Spring and fall are the best times to plant, with optimal temperatures being between 50°F and 90°F. These seasons provide the ideal balance of warmth and moisture to promote strong germination and healthy growth. Avoid planting during extreme heat or freezing conditions for the best results.
How often should I water GrowTrax™?
We recommend watering 2–3 times per day until the grass has fully grown in. The goal is to keep the Bio Fabric consistently moist during the germination and establishment period — this helps ensure healthy, even growth. Once your grass is established, you can transition to the recommended watering schedule for your local area and climate conditions.
What size rolls does GrowTrax™ come in?

Does GrowTrax™ have an expiry date?
GrowTrax™ packaging includes a “sell-by” date, which is a U.S. Department of Agriculture requirement. In general, when stored properly, the seeds remain viable for approximately 3–5 years.
Is GrowTrax™ safe for pets?
GrowTrax™ is safe for pets because it`s real grass. We recommend keeping pets off the GrowTrax™ until the grass has grown 3 inches. If pets will be outside, we recommend sectioning off an area for GrowTrax™ and an area for pets to play and do their business. Once the GrowTrax™ has grown in, reverse the sequence and block off the next area for GrowTrax™ to grow.
How to choose the right GrowTrax™ product?
Start by taking our helpful Quiz to find the best option for your yard. It’s easy—simply measure the width and length of your space (width × length = total square footage) or use our calculator to determine coverage.

Does GrowTrax™ contain plastic?
Our NU-Lawn and Lawn Repair rolls do not contain plastic. Our PRO-Lawn rolls do include plastic netting, which allows the mat to be secured to the ground with landscape staples when extra stability is needed.
Do I need to add nutrients to the soil before planting GrowTrax™?
Adding nutrients before planting isn’t required, but it can be beneficial—especially if your soil is depleted or low in organic matter. Healthy soil can help support stronger, more consistent growth.

Is GrowTrax™ OK to use on slopes or hillsides.
Yes. GrowTrax™ can be used on slopes and hillsides, but for best results we recommend our PRO-Lawn rolls. PRO-Lawn features built-in netting that helps hold the mat in place and can be secured with landscape blanket staples for added stability during establishment.
Do I need to peg or staple GrowTrax™ to the ground?
In most cases, no. GrowTrax™ NU-Lawn naturally tacks to the ground as you water it in. If you live in a windy area or want added security, we recommend using PRO-Lawn rolls, which feature built-in netting and can be secured with landscape staples.
Is GrowTrax™ easy to install?
Yes! GrowTrax™ is much easier to install effectively than grass seed or sod. Check out our How-To video to learn more. https://growtrax.com/pages/howto
How do I install GrowTrax™ on a prepared surface?
Start with a smooth, level surface free of weeds and debris. Lightly moisten the soil, then roll out GrowTrax™ and water it in so it makes full contact with the ground. Use a hose with a gentle shower setting to break up the paper and help it adhere. Keep the area consistently moist—watering multiple times daily—until the grass is established.
How do I install Growtrax on an existing lawn?
Simply scalp your lawn by mowing it as low as possible, rake away loose dead grass or debris, and lightly water the soil to help with GrowTrax adhesion. Then roll out your GrowTrax, water it in so it fully contacts the soil, and gently break up the paper backing with a hose using a shower setting. Keep the area consistently moist to kickstart germination.
How do I prevent birds from eating the seeds?
Most of the time GrowTrax™ will protect the new seed from birds but if they become a problem we recommend spreading out a thin layer of top soil or dirt on top of the GrowTrax™. Note that while it may seem that birds are eating all the seeds, there are tens of thousands of seeds in GrowTrax™ and from our experience the birds do very little damage. Another option that works well is to use a motion sensor sprinkler to deter birds and other potential pests like racoons.
When can I walk on my new GrowTrax lawn?
Lighting walking immediately as long as you’re not picking it up with your shoes
You can begin walking on your lawn after your GrowTrax lawn has had its second mowing, which is typically 6–8 weeks after planting. This allows the roots to establish properly and helps prevent damage to the new grass.
How long will it take to arrive?
We normally ship your GrowTrax™ order within 2 to 3 business days of when you place your order, and most orders arrive within 5 to 7 days from there.
Can I track my order?
Yes, after placing your order you will receive an order confirmation and link to track your package. If you have not received an email confirmation or tracking number please email us at customersupport@growtrax.com
